Cara qualified as a vet in Edinburgh in 1995 and was immediately recruited to work in a small animal referral practice in Yorkshire, where the partners were specialising in orthopaedics and cardiology. Her particular interest in surgery had started several years earlier, when she joined a specialist team in Canada for several months. She then moved to a referral practice where her interest in soft tissue surgery could be advanced. Cara spent 5 years in Yorkshire, learning a great deal, and had nearly completed her Certificate in Small Animal Surgery when she took a year off to race a yacht in a circumnavigation of the world.
On her return, she initially undertook locum work and after several months started to work for a Group based in Portsmouth, which gave her the opportunity to both work and sail. Initially based at a branch surgery for 4½ years she then took charge of another surgery in the Group which she ran for over 5 years, gaining many friends along the way.
Cara continued her interest in surgery, seeing both first and second opinion cases, mainly in soft tissue surgery, with some orthopaedics. She also undertook further training in opthalmology. She has kept up to date in all aspects of small animal medicine and surgery.
