The Border Terrier is a small dog with an alert gaze, a powerful desire to hunt and dig with typically high energy levels. On the whole they are very even tempered, friendly and have a good-natured personality. They originated in north-east England, near the border with Scotland, during the 18th century. Borders Terriers were built to have a long, narrow, flexible body, allowing them to squeeze through narrow holes. Border’s are generally healthy, but like all breeds, they are prone to some health conditions, such as hip dysplasia and heart defects.
They have a short, dense undercoat covered with a wiry topcoat, which usually requires hand-stripping twice a year to remove dead hair, but a weekly brush should suffice.
Life expectancy: 12-14 years
Originating country: Scotland

Interesting fact: One of the first traces of evidence of the breed includes a 1754 painting by Arthur Wentworth of two Border Terriers.
