Introducing Vetsure Tales! Real stories from Vetsure customers whose pets we’ve helped get better.

Back in July, Tonic, a 4-year-old black cat, found himself in a dangerous game of cat and mouse when he swallowed his brand-new toy…a mouse with a long string!

When your pet swallows something they shouldn’t, it’s important to contact your vet immediately. Foreign objects or certain foods can cause blockages or poisoning and will require veterinary treatment in most cases.

Tonic’s owner shared that he received exceptional care from the vets. He was given fluids and anti-nausea medication, as well as a scan to ensure everything was moving in the right direction.

While some animals may be made to be sick to reject anything bad they could’ve swallowed, in this case, it’s important to prevent sickness. As the toy he swallowed had a long string, there is risk of it getting tangled in internal organs such as the intestines and causing more damage.

Following a positive change overnight, the vet was happy to discharge Tonic with monitoring at home the following day. He is now doing much better but is banned from playing with any toys with a string!

His owners expressed that since the incident, Tonic has become extremely sensitive and has been off his food at times. An unfamiliar environment or physical discomfort from an accident or illness can cause pets to experience stress and become quite sensitive afterwards. This is fairly common as cats rely on familiarity to feel secure. Ensuring they have a safe, quiet space to rest, keeping their routine as normal, and approaching them in a soft and gentle manner can help them get back to feeling comfortable following a vet visit.

Thanks to the insurance policy Tonic’s owner has in place with Vetsure, he was able to get the treatment he needed without his owner having to worry about funding it. This means their full focus could go into nursing Tonic back to full health, and knowing that we’ve got it covered.
